Tyred for Business

E-Bike Battery Charging Lockers

Tyred is the exclusive UK partner for PowerShelter. Their lockers give every e-bike battery its own compartment outside the building, with sensors that cut the power if a compartment overheats. Battery-agnostic, so one unit serves every brand your residents, staff or riders bring.

Models
SmartShelter, 7 compartments, expandable by 8 per SmartModule up to two modules. CoreShelter, 10 compartments.
Batteries
Battery-agnostic. Any certified e-bike battery charges in the compartment, so a building serves every tenant, resident or employee without choosing one manufacturer.
Access
PIN, RFID, QR code or app on the SmartShelter. PIN, RFID, key or code lock on the CoreShelter.
Safety
Temperature sensors that shut off the power when a compartment overheats, gas sensors, extraction fans, an integrated circuit breaker and propagation resistance between compartments.
Power
A dedicated supply. The CoreShelter is single-phase 16 A; the SmartShelter comes in single-phase and three-phase versions. Confirmed at the site check.
Installation
Delivered assembled. A qualified electrician connects the supply and anchors the unit, typically 1 to 2 hours once power is in place.
Testing
EN 14470 fire testing, thermal runaway testing aligned with VDMA 24994, UK and EU declarations of conformity.
Terms
Buy or lease, quoted per site.

UK fire brigades now respond to a lithium-ion battery fire every five hours, and e-bike fires are up 250% in three years. In London alone the Fire Brigade attended 206 e-bike and e-scooter fires in 2025. The guidance that followed points the same way: charge outside, one battery per compartment, power that can be isolated.

London Fire Brigade, GN103 (October 2025)

Where possible, store and charge e-bikes in a dedicated external location, never in common areas, escape routes or on balconies.

Department for Transport premises guidance (February 2024)

Recommends separate, secure charging facilities such as purpose-designed metal lockers, ideally located outside, with external power isolation.

SFPE UK office guidance (May 2026)

Suggests dedicated charging lockers that hold individual battery units, with ventilation and electrical protection.

Buyers search for both. They solve different problems, and the UK guidance prefers one of them.

Charging cabinet

A fire-rated steel cupboard that stands indoors, usually in a plant room or workshop. It slows a fire but keeps the batteries, and the gases, inside the building. Suited to a supervised depot with its own fire strategy.

Charging locker

A weatherproof unit for outside the building with a compartment, a socket and a sensor per battery. It matches the external location that London Fire Brigade and the Department for Transport ask for, and residents or riders open their own door.

Which one

Residential blocks, offices, campuses and public sites: the locker, outside, at access level. Depots with trained staff and a fire risk assessment that already covers lithium-ion: either, and the site check settles it.

Buildings and facilities

Offices, residential blocks, universities and hotels. Residents and staff charge outside the building, and the fire risk assessment gets a documented charging point instead of a hallway socket.

Delivery and cargo fleets

Spare batteries charge in the depot yard, each in its own compartment with its own power control, so riders swap and go without a charging room to supervise.

Nottingham City Council's Travel Well community bike library lends e-bikes, adapted bikes and cargo bikes to residents free of charge. Charging dozens of batteries on a desk inside the building meant fire risk and staff supervision for every handover.

Two PowerShelters replaced the desk. Each borrower now gets a key to the bike and a key to the battery compartment, collects a charged battery and goes. Nobody supervises the charging, and the programme supports up to 300 residents.

Also in use

  • Hotel Okura, Amsterdam

A five-star hotel whose insurer would not cover e-bike batteries indoors. Instead of banning e-bikes, it installed two lockers outside: one for guests, one for staff.

  • ROC Hilversum, college campus

A standalone e-bike parking building was priced at up to 70,000 euros. Retrofitting lockers to the existing site cut the cost by up to 80%.
