The borough climbs steeply away from the river. Greenwich Park rises from the town to the Blackheath plateau, with cycling allowed only on the signed routes such as The Avenue and Blackheath Avenue, and not on the smaller paths. Shooters Hill on the A207 reaches 132 metres, the highest point in the borough. Book a brake check before a thin pad fades on the descent. Grit on the unsealed stretches of the riverside path works into tyres, and flat commuter miles wear chains until the gears skip.
