Worn square taper bottom brackets replaced.
The listed job is for a square taper bottom bracket, the sealed cartridge fitted to commuter, hybrid, Dutch and many children's bikes. For other standards, describe the bike when you book and the mechanic confirms the job and price before any work starts.
A part we do not carry is priced before it is fitted, so you approve the cost first.
Individual repairs can be booked for the same day, subject to availability, seven days a week across all 33 London boroughs.
A distance-based call-out fee can apply. It is free under 3 km from your nearest Tyred base and on orders of £150.00 or more, and it is shown before you pay.
Every repair and service price, listed by bike type, is on our prices page.
What a bottom bracket replacement includes
The cranks come off, the old unit comes out, the new one goes in and the cranks go back on at the right torque.
- Creak traced to the bottom bracket before anything is removed
- Cranks and pedals removed
- Old bottom bracket removed and the shell threads cleaned and greased
- New bottom bracket fitted and torqued
- Cranks refitted and the chainline and chain checked
- Pedals refitted and the bike test ridden
Not included
- The bottom bracket unit itself, priced before it is fitted. Tell us the bike model and the mechanic brings or sources the right size.
- New cranks, chainrings or pedals, priced before they are fitted.
- Frame repairs. A cracked or damaged bottom bracket shell is inspected but not repaired.
Signs the bottom bracket is worn
Creaks travel through a bike frame, so the noise alone is not proof. These are the signs that point to the bottom bracket.
Creaking under load
A creak or click once per pedal stroke, loudest when climbing or pushing off from the lights, that stays whether you are seated or standing.
Play at the cranks
Hold a crank arm and push it sideways. Movement you can feel at the crank, with the pedal still, means the bearing is gone.
Rough rotation
With the chain off the chainring, spin the cranks by hand. A gritty, notchy or stiff turn is worn bearings.
Grinding or rumbling
A low rumble that rises with pedalling speed and disappears when you coast.
Water has been inside
A bike that has lived outside, been ridden through standing water or been jet washed is a candidate. Rust on the spindle confirms it.
The creak is something else
Pedals, chainring bolts, the seatpost and a loose crank bolt all creak in time with pedalling. The mechanic checks these first and tells you what they find.

Replaced where the bike stands
Priced before you book, tested before we leave.
Tyred mechanics travel to you by cargo bike with tools and common parts on board, including the crank extractor and bottom bracket tools the job needs, so the work happens at your home or workplace rather than in a workshop queue.
Each job is priced before you book and tested before the bike is handed back. The bottom bracket unit is matched to the shell width and spindle length of your bike and priced before it is fitted, so you approve the cost first.
