Gear cables ride with every mechanic. A derailleur, chain or cassette we do not carry is priced before it is fitted, so you approve the cost first.

Individual repairs can be booked for the same day, subject to availability, seven days a week across all 33 London boroughs.

A distance-based call-out fee can apply. It is free under 3 km from your nearest Tyred base and on orders of £150.00 or more, and it is shown before you pay.

Every repair and service price, listed by bike type, is on our prices page.

What is included

What a gear adjustment includes

Indexing is the mechanic's word for lining the derailleur up with each sprocket so every shift lands.

  • Derailleur hanger alignment checked
  • High and low limit screws set so the chain cannot overshoot
  • Cable tension set so every gear indexes cleanly
  • Chain gap on the rear derailleur set
  • Front derailleur trimmed to stop chain rub
  • A gear cable replacement adds a new inner cable, the outer casing checked and the gears re-indexed
  • Every gear tested under load before the bike is handed back

Not included

  • A new chain, cassette or chainrings. Worn drivetrain parts make gears skip under load even when the indexing is right, and they are priced before they are fitted.
  • A new derailleur or shifter, priced before it is fitted.
  • Rohloff hub servicing. Gear cabling on a Rohloff hub is fine.
When to book

Signs your gears need attention

Shifting problems creep in gradually and get blamed on the rider.

  • Skipping under load

The chain jumps a gear when you push on the pedals. Cable tension is the first check; a worn chain and cassette is the second.

  • Ghost shifting

The bike changes gear on its own. At the rear this is indexing or a sticky cable. On a new bike it is the cable settling in the first weeks.

  • Will not reach the biggest or smallest sprocket

A limit screw or the cable tension stops the derailleur short. An adjustment, not a new part.

  • Stiff or notchy shifter

A corroded or frayed cable drags inside the outer casing. A new cable brings the lever back.

  • Chain rubs the front derailleur

The front derailleur needs trimming or its cable tension needs setting.

  • Noise in every gear

A dry or rusty chain sounds like a gear problem but is not one. Our chain guides cover cleaning and fixing it, and the mechanic tells you if the chain is worn.

Your mechanic

Tuned where the bike stands

Priced before you book, tested before we leave.

Tyred mechanics travel to you by cargo bike with tools, gear cables and common spares on board, so the derailleur is set up at your home or workplace with the bike on a stand, rather than in a workshop queue.

Each job is priced before you book and tested before the bike is handed back. If the chain or cassette is worn past the point where indexing helps, the mechanic shows you the wear and prices the parts before anything is fitted.
